WHAT’S A TRINI?
Don’t know what a Trini is? A Trini is a person from the twin island republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Never heard of it? Well we are quite a small nation but are full of some great and internationally known talent. Calypso music is from Trinidad. Limbo is from Trinidad. Steel drums are from Trinidad. Brian Lara, the most famous cricketer in the world, is from Trinidad. Dwight Yorke, the international football star, is from Trinidad (technically Tobago, actually). And lots of Miss Worlds and Miss Universes are from Trinidad. The most recent winner of the American TV show ‘Project Runway‘ is from Trinidad. Steven Ames, the professional golfer, is from Trinidad. And no matter where you go, you meet people who say ‘Oh yeah I have a friend who is a Trini!’ or ‘My university roommate was from Trinidad!’ We are a small nation, but we sure do get around all over the world. People from Trinidad and Tobago refer to themselves as ‘Trinis’ and are proud to do so. If you don’t know where we are, check out this map. We’re at the bottom of the Caribbean, the very last island in the chain, right off the border from the mainland of South America. A beautiful and lush place with great food, beautiful people who like to lime (get together and drink/relax), and a permanent ‘no worries’ state of mind.
